The Venus Flytrap is the most famous of all carnivorous plants. The plant mostly lives in North and South Carolina along the coastal plain. There are also species of carnivorous plants found in Canada, Russia, South America, Asia and Europe.

Venus Flytrap has a dormant period in the winter. A Venus Flytrap going dormant usually show in growth, and the leaves may slowly turn black and die. The plant will come back in Spring. In a Venus Flytrap it is because the bugs don't live in the winter and they don't have anything to eat.

The leaves of Venus' Flytrap open wide and on them are short, stiff hairs called trigger or sensitive hairs. When anything touches these hairs enough to bend them, the two lobes of the leaves snap shut trapping whatever is inside. The trap will shut in less than a second. The trap doesn't close all of the way at first. It is thought that it stays open for a few seconds in order to allow very small insects to escape because they wouldn't provide enough food. If the object isn't food, e.g., a stone, or a nut, the trap will reopen in about twelve hours and 'spit' it out.

My Reflection

I think Venus Flytraps are very special plants. They are not animals but they can open and close their leaves. They have remarkable ways to stay alive in the cool, terrible winter.

I really like them very much. But even though I like them , I still think they are a little disgusting because they catch insects so they must have some special structures for catching them , like mucus , stiff hair . Plus, everyone knows that eating insects is yucky!

I learn a lot about the amazing Venus Flytrap. I learn about how they catch preys, where they live, how they stay alive in the freezing winter, where they are found…. I think Venus Flytraps are really mysterious. We must find out more about them, and understand more about them!
